Amplasata pe strazile neiertatoare si corupte ale Londrei Victoriene din 1880, povestea incepe in sala de muzica baroca, grandioasa, unde cel mai renumit interpret al capitalei, Dan Leno (Douglas Booth), intra pe scena. Spectaculosul actor interpreteaza un monolog, informand publicul despre soarta ciudata a unei tinere care infrumusetase odata aceasta scena, draga prietena Lizzie Cree (Olivia Cooke).
