Este o coproductie franco-britanica ce i-a scandalizat deja pe criticii francezi, nemultumiti de faptul ca marele Ludovic al XIV-lea nu doar ca nu este interpretat de un francez, dar nici nu vorbeste o boaba de franceza. Creat de Simon Mirren si David Wolstencroft, primul sezon a avut un buget imens, de 27 de milioane de euro, costul unui episod fiind de doua ori mai mare decat cel al celui mai faimos serial de epoca al momentului, Downton Abbey.
