Lewis is a young, talented singer who performs in speakeasies. When he bolts one job for another, the mob boss who owns the first speakeasy has his thugs try to kill Lewis. Lewis survives, but his vocal cords are cut and he cannot sing. Several years later, his buddy tracks him down and tries to help him with little success. That attempt, though, leads to Lewis meeting Letty Page. They fall in love and she inspires him to follow up on an offer to become a comedian.
Lewis este o cântăreț tânăr și talentat care cântă în baruri clandestine. Când își face un loc de muncă pentru altul, șeful mafiei care deține primul bar clandestin îi pune pe bătăușii săi să încerce să-l omoare pe Lewis. Lewis supraviețuiește, dar corzile vocale îi sunt tăiate și nu mai poate cânta. Câțiva ani mai târziu, prietenul său îl urmărește și încearcă să-l ajute cu puțin succes. Această încercare, totuși, îl face pe Lewis să se întâlnească cu Letty Page. Se îndrăgostesc și ea îl inspiră să accepte o ofertă de a deveni comediant.
