The corpse of a shabbily dressed young woman has been discovered in the mud flats of the Thames at low tide. Police assume she's a prostitute, but Dr. Watson suspects something more and goes to his old friend Holmes, now retired and at very loose ends.
Faimosul detectiv, secondat de colaboratorul sau apropiat dr. Watson, se afla pe urmele unui criminal in serie, care asasineaza tinere din lumea buna, strangulandu-le cu un ciorap de matase. Filmul propune – intr-o ambianta de epoca minutios reconstituita – un Sherlok Holmes mai "intunecat" si mai depresiv decat am fost obisnuiti de anterioarele ecranizari ale scrierilor lui Sir Conan Doyle, fara a trada spiritul acestuia.
