When the atheistic ranting of Irish-American author James Mulcahy upsets the inhabitants of the Irish village to which he has retired, a mob threatens him. But moments after he has dared God to strike him dead, a stranger appears and does so. The man, dubbed "Johnny Nobody" by the press, claims no knowledge of Mulcahy or even of himself. He asks the help of the village priest, Father Carey, in his upcoming trial for Mulcahy's murder. While the amnesiac Johnny goes to trial, Father Carey mulls questions of belief raised by the case. And then, the good father learns a little more about Johnny Nobody...
Când vorbele ateiste ale autorului irlandez-american James Mulcahy îi supără pe locuitorii satului irlandez în care s-a retras, o mulțime îl amenință. Dar la câteva momente după ce L-a provocat pe Dumnezeu să-l lovească, apare un străin și face acest lucru. Bărbatul, poreclit "Johnny Nobody" de către presă, susține că nu știe nimic despre Mulcahy sau chiar despre el însuși. El cere ajutorul preotului satului, părintele Carey, în procesul său pentru uciderea lui Mulcahy. În timp ce amnezicul Johnny merge la proces, părintele Carey se gândește la întrebările de credință ridicate de caz. Și apoi, bunul părinte află puțin mai multe despre Johnny Nobody...
