Tony Lip, a bouncer in 1962, is hired to drive pianist Don Shirley on a tour through the Deep South in the days when African Americans, forced to find alternate accommodations and services due to segregation laws below the Mason-Dixon Line, relied on a guide called The Negro Motorist Green Book.
Povestea reală a unei prietenii improbabile dintre un pianist de culoare şi un italiano-american dur pe care cel dintâi îl angajează ca şofer şi asistent personal. Unde? În America anilor '60, unde rasismul şi prejudecăţile încă erau o normalitate. Pianistul Don Shirley şi şoferul său, Tony "Lip" Vallelonga, au fost personalităţi publice, Tony Lip ajungând, după evenimentele din film, un actor destul de cunoscut la Hollywood (a debutat în Naşul, a apărut în Goodfellas şi în serialul The Sopranos).
