La finalul anilor '40, în Cuba, Chico și Rita încep o pasionată poveste de dragoste. Chico este un tânăr pianist îndrăgostit de jazz, iar Rita visează să ajungă o mare cântăreață. Din noaptea în care destinul îi face să se întâlnească la o petrecere într-un club din Havana, viața îi tot apropie și îi desparte, asemenea unor personaje de bolero.
