Filmul, inspirat din realitate, îl prezintă pe ofiţerul german Franz von Werra, pilot al unui avion de vânătoare, care a fost doborât în timpul celui de-al Doilea Război Mondial pe teritoriul Marii Britanii, fiind singurul pilot german care a reuşit să evadeze după ce a fost luat prizonier.
