In the Saumur region. Hating the city, Commissioner Duval moved to a small café to enjoy his passion, bowling, more easily. At the café 'Le Progrès' everyone knows the insatiable curiosity of the policeman, who is often prevented from acting in the region, because the district is under the jurisdiction of the National Gendarmerie, which inevitably leads to friction. Emilienne, the owner of the place, notices Duval out of the corner of her eye when her daughter, Cécile, arrives completely panicked to report the scene she witnessed in her taxi: a car and its passenger are burning at the bottom of a ravine. The gendarmes concluded that it was a trivial accident, but Commissioner Duval has a reserved opinion. The victim, André Faucheux, the richest landowner in the region, was married to a very beautiful woman, Hélène. When Cécile tells Duval that Hélène Faucheux will receive a capital of five million francs, his suspicions are strengthened...
În regiunea Saumur. Urând orașul, comisarul Duval s-a mutat într-o mică cafenea pentru a se bucura mai ușor de pasiunea sa, jocul de bowling. La cafeneaua "Le Progrès" toată lumea cunoaște curiozitatea insațiabilă a polițistului, care este adesea împiedicat să acționeze în regiune, deoarece districtul se află sub jurisdicția Jandarmeriei Naționale, ceea ce duce inevitabil la fricțiuni. Emilienne, proprietara locului, îl observă pe Duval cu coada ochiului, când fiica ei, Cécile, sosește complet panicată pentru a raporta scena la care a fost martoră în taxiul ei: o mașină și pasagerul ei ard pe fundul unei râpe. Jandarmii au concluzionat că a fost un accident banal, dar comisarul Duval are o opinie rezervată. Victima, André Faucheux, cel mai bogat proprietar de pământ din regiune, era căsătorit cu o femeie foarte frumoasă, Hélène. Când Cécile îi spune lui Duval că Hélène Faucheux va primi un capital de cinci milioane de franci, suspiciunile lui se întăresc...
