After burning Rome, Emperor Nero decides to blame the Christians, and issues the edict that they are all to be caught and sent to the arena. Two old Christians are caught, and about to be hauled off, when Marcus, the highest military official in Rome, comes upon them. When he sees their stepdaughter Mercia, he instantly falls in love with her and frees them. Marcus pursues Mercia, which gets him into trouble with Emperor (for being easy on Christians) and with the Empress, who loves him and is jealous.
După ce a incendiat Roma, împăratul Nero decide să dea vina pe creștini și emite edictul conform căruia toți vor fi prinși și trimiși în arenă. Doi bătrâni creștini sunt prinși și sunt în drum spre arenă, când Marcus, cel mai înalt oficial militar din Roma, vine peste ei. Când o vede pe fiica lor vitregă Mercia, se îndrăgostește instantaneu de ea și îi eliberează. Marcus o adăposteşte pe Mercia, ceea ce îi va face probleme cu Împăratul (pentru că este ușor când e vorba de creștini) și cu Împărăteasa, care îl iubește și este geloasă.
