In July 1942, in the Second World War, the rearguard of the Russian army protects the bridgehead of the Don River against the German army while the retreating Russian troops cross the bridge. While they move back to the Russian territory through the countryside, the soldiers show their companionship, sentiments, fears and heroism to defend their motherland.
În vara anului 1942, armata germană e oprită la porţile Stalingradului. Sovieticii sunt hotărâţi să nu cedeze, luptele se duc pentru fiecare metru pătrat. Un mic detaşament de puşcaşi, sub comanda căpitanului Sumskov, primeşte ordinul să asigure trecerea peste râul Don a trupelor proaspete. Măcelăriţi de aviaţia şi artileria germană, oamenii lui Sumskov rezistă patru zile pe poziţiile indicate.
