In the 16th century in the Cévennes, a horse dealer by the name of Michael Kohlhaas leads a happy and prosperous family life. When a lord treats him unjustly, this pious, upstanding man raises an army and puts the country to fire and sword in order to have his rights restored.
Povestea filmului este inspirata din nuvela omonima a lui Heinrich von Kleist din 1811, o lucrare suprinzator de moderna pentru momentul respectiv, avand ca tema omul in cautarea dreptatii (la randul ei, nuvela romanteaza un caz real din Germania secolului XVI, cel al unui respectat negustor devenit haiduc in urma unui abuz).
