Alungata de sotul ei, Amos, din cauza ca nu putea sa-i daruiasca un fiu, Maria Magdalena devine amanta lui Silvano, un ofiter roman, capatandu-si astfel un statut de femeie usoara. Silvano o pune pe Maria Magdalena sa-l spioneze pe Ioan Botezatorul. In felul acesta devine o persoana de incredere a Irodiadei, noua sotie a lui Irod.
