This film is about the relationship of a mother and her daughter, the split-up of their family, the blessing and curse of belonging together and about coming of age - all this from the perspective of the young girl Aglaja. The story is based on real-life events, an Eastern European circus artist family that fled to the West. If they want to stay in the circus business they have to make up an exotic act. The mother spends all their money to buy a very dangerous act: hanging by her hair high up in the dome of the circus while juggling with burning torches. Every night Aglaja is terrified by the fear of losing her mother. But, on some day, she has to follow the family tradition and become the "Woman with the Hair of Steel".
În speranța unei vieți mai bune, o familie româno-maghiară de circari, fuge de regimul ceaușist și emigrează în vest, la începutul anilor 80. Odată ajunși acolo, ca să poată ramâne în branșă, sunt nevoiți să gasească ceva exotic cu care să impresioneze: mama are un numar special, stă atarnată de păr de cupola circului. Fiica Aglaya este extrem de îngrijorată că mama ei ar putea să moară executând numarul, iar această temere devine o grijă zilnică. În pofida îngrijorărilor, urmănd tradiția familiei, ea însăși ajunge să fie “Femeia cu parul de oțel”. Filmul, a cărui acțiune se desfășoară în perioada României comuniste este ecranizarea romanului omonim scris de Aglaja Veteranyi. „Este o poveste firavă, sensibilă, despre oameni meniți să-i bucure pe alții, călcând deseori peste problemele proprii. În aparență e o lume a lucrurilor câștigate ușor, în realitate însă, fiecare zâmbet are în spate povești cel puțin cutremurătoare. Dar așa e viața, nu iartă pe nimeni în tumultul ei.” – Krisztina Deak.
