All eyes focus on the Vatican, watching for the traditional puffs of white smoke that signal the election of the next Pope. This time much more is at stake. The new pontiff may be the only person who can bring peace to a world on the brink of nuclear nightmare.
Arhiepiscopul ucrainean Kiril Lakota este eliberat după doua decenii de închisoare politică în Siberia. Este adus la Roma de către Fr. David Telemond, un tânăr preot problematic cu care se împrietenește. Ajuns la Vatican, Lakota este trimis imediat la Papă care îl promovează la rangul de cardinal. Când Papa moare neașteptat, Lakota este numit să-i ocupe locul. Acum papa Kiril I trebuie să găsească o soluție pentru a împiedica războiul dintre Uniunea Sovietică și China care este pe cale să izbucnească, să-l aducă pe prietenul lui, Fr.
