In January 1943 the German army, afraid of an Allied invasion of the Balkans, launched a great offensive against Yugoslav Partisans in Western Bosnia. The only way out for Partisan forces and thousands of refugees was the bridge on the river Neretva.

În ianuarie 1943, armata germană, temându-se de o invazie aliată în Balcani, a lansat o mare ofensivă împotriva partizanilor iugoslavi din vestul Bosniei. Singura cale de ieșire pentru forțele partizane și mii de refugiați a fost podul de pe râul Neretva.
