Waldemar Nods, a young man from Suriname, meets the older Dutch woman Rika van der Lans and they fall in love. In pre-WWII Netherlands they could not be more different. The one black, the other white, 17 years between them and on top of that Rika already has four children with another man. They love each other, but then Rika appears to be pregnant.
Filmul este bazat pe fapte reale si prezinta povestea lui Waldemar Nods, un tanar din Surinam. In 1928, la varsta de 20 de ani, Waldemar paraseste Surinamul pentru a studia in Olanda. Acolo o va cunoaste pe Rika, o femeie in varsta de 37 ani, mama a patru copii, care isi parasise sotul in urma infidelitatii acestuia.Rika ii va inchiria lui Waldemar o camera din noua casa inchiriata de ea si, incet-incet, intre cei doi se va naste o idila, iar rodul acestei idil…
