Set during the fading glory of the Austro-Hungarian empire, the film tells of the rise and fall of Alfred Redl, an ambitious young officer who proceeds up the ladder to become head of the Secret Police only to become ensnared in political deception.

In ultimii ani ai imperiului austro-ungar, ambitiosul ofiter Alfred Redl se chinuie sa acceada la cele mai inalte ranguri ale armatei. In timpul ascensiunii sale, principala sa grija este sa nu se afle ca e homosexual, dar puterea tot mai mare va atrage curand atentia asupra lui.
