Plasat în secolul al XVII-lea, într-o mănăstire retrasă, filmul relatează povestea unui tânăr preot care trebuie să exorcizeze stareța și măicuțele care erau posedate de demoni. În încercările sale repetate de a alunga răul, preotul se îndrăgostește de frumoasa măicuță Ioana.
