Once upon a time, a poor woodcutter and his wife lived in a great forest. Cold, hunger, poverty, and a war raging all around them meant their lives were very hard. One day, the woodcutter's wife rescues a baby. A baby girl thrown from one of the many trains that constantly pass through the forest. This baby, this "most precious of cargoes", will transform the lives of the poor woodcutter's wife and her husband, as well as those whose paths the child will cross—including the man who threw her from the train. And some will try to protect her, whatever the cost. Their story will reveal the worst and the best in the hearts of men.
A fost odată ca niciodată, un tăietor de lemne sărac și soția sa locuiau într-o pădure mare. Frigul, foamea, sărăcia și un război care făcea ravagii în jurul lor au însemnat că viața lor a fost foarte grea. Într-o zi, soția tăietorului de lemne salvează un copil. O fetiță aruncată dintr-unul dintre multele trenuri care trec constant prin pădure. Acest copil, această "cea mai prețioasă marfă" va transforma viețile soției bietului tăietor de lemne și ale soțului ei, precum și ale celor ale căror drumuri se va intersecta copilul – inclusiv bărbatul care a aruncat-o din tren. Și unii vor încerca să o protejeze, cu orice preț. Povestea lor va dezvălui ce este mai rău și ce este mai bun în inimile oamenilor.
