Spania, iunie 1808. Armata lui Napoleon sufera prima infrangere din razboiul impotriva armatelor spaniole, dupa ce un tanar tobosar, pe nume Bruc, s-a folosit de ecoul din munti pentru a-i speria si a-i pune pe fuga pe soldatii francezi. Napoleon cere capul indraznetului tobosar, asa ca Alain Maraval, capitanul garzilor imperiale, isi aduna oamenii si porneste sa-l vaneze pe Bruc.
